Beating the Heat with a Shaded Trail and Dog-Friendly Taproom
Read about our afternoon at Signal Hill Park and Tucked Away Brewing Co., a dog-friendly brewery in Manassas.
Summer is probably dogs least favorite season. Walks are super short and it’s neither fun nor safe for them to join us in a lot of our outdoor activities (lookin’ at your fireworks and al fresco dining). For pups that live in the city, it’s even harder to find places to escape the heat–fewer lakes, ponds, etc and in the DC area, wineries with dog-friendly tasting rooms are an hour drive. But there are several breweries. And they either have food trucks available or allow you to bring your own food in. So you’ve got yourself a cool place to sit and your pup can join while you eat!
For this outing, we wanted to try a new brewery and also wanted a park nearby so Rummy could stretch her legs first. We found two great spots in Manassas.
Signal Hill Park
Signal Hill Park is about two miles away from Tucked Away Brewing Co. We knew nothing about it prior to arrival and were so pleasantly surprised. First, there’s a water park and ball fields, something we weren’t expecting at all. We found a grassy area at the end of the first parking lot, but fortunately there were no parking spaces available so we moved on to the larger lot by the water park.
At the far end of the lot are a few soccer fields. And behind those is the best surprise–a shaded path! It’s not super long (maybe a quarter mile?), so we walked it then reversed to walk it again. But for a 90+ degree day, it was perfect. Rummy could explore a new area in the shade and burn some energy before the brewery. This is so key in summer, when walks are shorter and we have to be more creative in finding ways to comfortably get her out of the house.
The park does have more walking paths that are much longer, but we didn’t walk them as they’re not shaded. This will be a great place to enjoy in cooler weather, but for July and August, that short, shaded path was perfect.
Tucked Away Brewing Co.
Tucked Away Brewing Co. is a great dog-friendly brewery in Manassas that allows dogs in the taproom. The first thing we noticed is all of the indoor seating. If you’ve read any of our reviews you know how much we value an abundance of indoor seating. Among the various types of tables– 4-tops, picnic tables, bars seats and a few Adirondack chairs–there’s seating for well over 75 people. And the tables are spread out, so you’re not sitting on top of the next one. We like this because dogs, like people, like their personal space.
They had a food truck outside that delivered the food to the tables once ordered outside. We were slightly gluttonous and had the chicken wings and fries, which were both delicious. We paired them with the Local National, a pale ale with jalapeños. Pretty perfect. Back to the dogs…
They provided a water bowl at the table for Rummy. That and the cool, concrete floor are exactly what she needed to relax. They go further than just providing a comfortable place for both you and your pup to enjoy. They also have a Dog of the Month club and dog-friendly events from time to time. Earlier this month they held a Pups on the Patio Party with pet vendors, prizes and fun for the family. Check out the Events section of our Facebook page for more.
Family-Friendly & Veteran-Owned!
They also have a few games for the kids to enjoy– corn hole and an arcade game (one of the shorter ones kids can sit and play). I couldn’t get any photos of this area without feeling creepy. Don’t think the parents would appreciate me snapping shots of their kids playing, but rest assured this is a family-friendly brewery as well.
And we love supporting Veteran-Owned businesses. You’ll find hints of this in the names of their beers and they offer a 10 percent discounts for retired and active military, first responders and school employees.
As the name suggests, it is tucked away in the back of the retail park. But it’s not hard to find–just pay attention to the suite numbers. And they have parking which is a bonus. We’ll be back to this dog-friendly brewery in Manassas!
5 Pups
We give Tucked Away Brewing Co 5 Pups for allowing dogs in the taproom, lots of indoor seating, water bowls and cool, concrete floors for your pup’s comfort and all of the extras for people– food truck, games and parking.
