Tips for Networking & Striking Up Conversation

Networking is all about connection, but it can sometimes feel awkward to strike up a conversation. One of the easiest ways to break the ice? Let your personal interests do the talking!

I’ve mentioned before that I wear a lot of Alabama gear when I work out. While it motivates me, it’s also an excellent conversation starter. Whether I’m at the gym, grocery store, or walking my dog, people notice my shirt and ask, “Are you from Alabama?” or they just start talking about college football. And from there, the conversation flows naturally.

The key is to make yourself approachable. Most people like meeting others, but it’s often the initial approach that feels intimidating. By wearing something that showcases my personal interests—like my Alabama shirt—I make it easy for others to start a conversation.

This principle doesn’t just apply to in-person interactions. I use it on social media too. Whether it’s talking about Bama, bourbon, or my love for Rummy, sharing these things about myself gives others an easy entry point to start chatting with me.

Of course, it’s always great when these conversations lead to business connections or new friendships, but even if they don’t, I’ve spent my time talking about things I enjoy. And that’s a win.

So, if you’re looking for a way to break the ice and network more effectively, try putting your personal interests front and center. You’ll be surprised how much easier conversations become!
