Using a Whiteboard for Productivity
Do you use a whiteboard at home or in your office? For me, it’s a must have in my productivity system. There’s something about seeing everything laid out that helps me stay focused and on track. And I’ve found a way to make it work even better by creating a system that’s efficient and looks great!
It’s All About Aesthetics
First off, aesthetics matter. My whiteboard isn’t just functional; it’s also beautiful in my space. I chose a glass whiteboard which matches the teal aqua color on the walls of my study. And let’s not forget the markers! I use pastel-colored markers—pinks, purples, blues, and greens—which not only brighten up my space but also make me happy when I use them. It’s simple but I’ve found that having a pretty space makes me more productive.
The Red Marker System
Now I’m all about systems. Here’s how I use my whiteboard to stay on top of my tasks. Whenever I think of something I need to add to my to-do list but I don’t want to get on my computer, I write it in the middle of my whiteboard in red. Why red? Because it’s harsh, it doesn’t match any of the other pretty pastel colors and it bothers me—in a good way.
When I sit down at my desk in the morning I take everything I wrote in red on my whiteboard and transfer it to the appropriate to-do list on my computer. The red serves as an immediate reminder that I need to do something and I get so much satisfaction from erasing it once I’ve done it.
What Works for You
I know this might sound a little weird but here’s the thing about productivity: it’s all about finding what works for you. What’s important is that you create a system you can stick to. Maybe for you it’s not a whiteboard or color-coded markers but there’s something out there that will make you stay organized and consistent.
My whiteboard system keeps me accountable and organized. Whether I’m doing client transactions or planning events, it makes sure nothing falls through the cracks. And it’s nice to walk into my study and see a clean whiteboard at the start of each day.
