Why Headshots are Important

Let’s talk about headshots. They seem like a small thing but they’re a big deal. Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you and your business before they even meet you in person. It’s a way to show your personality and style so you have to get it right.

When you’re planning your headshot consider:

  1. What to Wear: Choose an outfit that reflects your professional image and your personal style. Something you feel comfortable and confident in.
  2. How to Pose: What message do you want to convey? A relaxed confident pose makes you look approachable and professional.
  3. To Smile or Not to Smile: Your expression can influence how your target audience sees you. A genuine smile makes you look friendly and approachable, a more serious expression professionalism and focus.
  4. Current Look: Make sure your headshot looks like you now. Avoid outdated styles or colours that don’t reflect your current look.

Here’s a funny (and slightly embarrassing) story from my recent headshot session. I had my hair curled and let’s be real, my hair never holds a curl. I asked the stylist to use extra hairspray and she did – maybe a bit too much. When I went to loosen the curls before the shoot they were stuck in place with some sort of super glue hairspray. I tried to brush through them and ended up pulling my hair out. The photographer and her assistant watched in horror as I had a mini meltdown.

Despite the drama the photographer was very understanding and patient. She told me the goal was to make me look like me and once I calmed down the pictures turned out great.

So take this as a reminder to make sure your headshot is you. Update it if needed and don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance to get it just right.

Remember your headshot is more than a photo – it’s part of your professional brand. Make it the best version of you.
