Why You Should Attend Networking Events Solo
When it comes to networking events or conferences, our instinct is to go with a group. After all, it’s nice to have friends around, right? But if you really want to grow your network and get the most out of the event, I’m going to challenge you to go alone.
Why Going Alone Works
Going to events alone can be scary. You have to work for every conversation and there’s no safety net of friends. But that’s exactly why it works. When you go alone you have to get out of your comfort zone and actually talk to people. Instead of sticking with your usual crew, you open yourself up to new opportunities and connections.
Groups Stick Together
At most conferences I see groups of colleagues or friends who come together and stick together. They chat with each other, eat together and attend sessions together. But here’s the thing: they rarely meet new people.
If your goal is education only, that’s okay. But if you want to grow your network and meet potential collaborators, clients or partners, staying within your group won’t help. Going solo allows you to meet more people and make deeper connections.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
For many people walking into a room full of strangers alone is one of the most terrifying experiences. But that’s exactly what makes it so powerful. By pushing past that discomfort you’ll find people are often thrilled you approached them. Most attendees are there for the same reason you are—to connect. Once you break the ice you’ll be amazed at how open and friendly others can be.
My Solo Networking
In my experience going to events alone always pays off. Sure it’s tough at first but once you start talking to people the rewards are obvious. Whether it’s a conference or a casual networking happy hour I’ve met some of my best clients and collaborators by going to events alone. Every conversation is an opportunity and you can leave with valuable connections you wouldn’t have made if you stayed in your comfort zone.
What’s Your Approach?
Next time you’re faced with the choice of going to an event with a group or alone consider stepping out of your usual circle. Try it and you might be surprised at how much more you get out of the experience. So what’s your approach when you go to networking events? Do you go solo or stick with your crew?
Going to events alone can be a career game-changer and if you want to grow your network in real estate or connect with professionals in the military/government community I’d love to help.
